Why I need the iSTEPup Foundation
Why I need the iSTEPup Foundation
It would not be easy for me to achieve my goal of becoming a doctor without the help of
iSTEPup. I am coming from a family of 4 I am a first born. My father and mum where separated when I
was young. My father was illiterate man this made he not employed. This made him become a drunken
man and he was not able to provide me the basic needs like clothes, shelter and food.
Without the help of iSTEPup it will be not possible for me to achieve the cost of collage because here In
Tanzania health collages are very expensive I am sure without this helps it was not possible to achieve my
first step of becoming a doctor. Through this help it I believe I will achieve my goal of becoming a doctor
and help other people.
Buddy
Joseph Mwandwanga and Andrea Solnes Miltenburg
We have known Juma since he was 11 years old. Together with a group of other boys he joined the Roots and Culture Foundation that Joseph had established – with the purpose of supporting street children and getting them back to school. Juma received support for his Primary Education through a personal sponsor from Germany for the first few years. Afterwards, and when the foundation was resolved due to Andrea and Joseph moving abroad, we took over the support for Juma ourselves, as he showed great commitment to continue, with good school results. Teachers expressed their admiration for Juma and that he was a good student with good performance. We are very proud that he has been able to achieve a secondary school result with a grade B.
After completion of his secondary school degree Juma has lived with us on our compound and he has been sharing with us his dreams for further education and becoming a doctor. As Andrea is a medical doctor herself, she understands this drive and we wish to give him a chance to pursue his dreams, although we recognize this is not an easy road, it will take dedication and commitment for the coming years. And it is a reality that this also is quite costly here in Tanzania. The iSTEPup foundation offers a great opportunity for him. Andrea has herself supported medical students through a similar foundation as iSTEPup called DoHawood, with focus on supporting students in Somaliland. She has seen first-hand how much scholarship support can mean for young adults in low resource settings.
Although we have been living in Norway for some time, we are now in Tanzania again. This means we will be able to be in close contact with Juma and follow up his progress in the first few years.
