Why I need the iSTEPup Foundation
My name is Gabriel Japhet Moya, aged 22 year old. I am the fifth child among of the seven members of my family. I am the only one among our family members who attained the chance of studying. Some of my relatives have ended primary school, others did not even get a chance even to go to primary school.
So with this situation, I am so happy to get this chance of studying Nursing at Kabanga College. In school my favourite subjects were biology, physics and chemistry. My big dream was to become a medical doctor. Because of the financial problems, that was no option. Because I like working with patients and support them, nursing feels like a good opportunity to still work in the hospital and support my community, thus is my reason to choose this course. I hope that with my Nursing diploma, I will be able to help my family and other around me financially, but also I hope to save money for studying in the future, so hopefully I can become a medical doctor one day.
I really appreciate the help of iSTEPup foundation. Because of the poverty in my family and it´s bad condition, without your help I could not study further.

I met Gabriel in the village of Kabanga, a small village in Western Tanzania, where I work as a Global Health medical doctor. My colleague (also an MD in Global Health) and I are regularly approached by people asking if we can help with something, and usually, I reply that I am simply not in a position to help everyone. This time, however, was different. I heard about Gabriel so often that I really wanted to meet him.
At first, a nurse from our maternity ward called us to ask for help in finding a college for a young boy from the village who is very smart but comes from a poor family. He told us that his parents keep goats as livestock and have no other means of income. The boy, Gabriel, had passed his secondary school exams with good grades, but was now stuck because his parents were not able to send him to a college. Shortly after this, another colleague came up to me with the exact same story, asking if I couldn’t help out. This was followed by a school teacher who approached my colleague and me about that smart boy in his class who had so much potential.
When I met Gabriel, he indeed turned out to be that friendly, calm, modest, and trustworthy boy everyone had been telling me about. He spoke about his dreams for the future and about his life in Kabanga. After our first meeting, I bumped into him regularly on the hospital grounds, where I saw him carrying heavy stones in the scorching sun to earn some extra money to finance his education. After seeing that, I knew for sure: this boy is motivated. Together, we applied for iSTEPup. I am convinced that after completing his education, he will make a vital contribution to healthcare in the region.
